Systemic advocacy, powered by lived experience and faith-rooted ethics, championing policy reform in disability, youth, mental health & regional equity for all Australians.

About me:

A joyful moment captured: the newlyweds, both wearing glasses, sit together holding their marriage certificate; she in a stunning white wedding dress with a tiara, and he in a sharp black suit with a red bow tie.

Hi, I’m Karen Boulton-Gorry (she/her). I’m a 22-year-old Christian, newly married community advocate and lived-experience worker focused on systemic change in disability, mental health, youth engagement and bridging the urban–regional divide. I’m the only biological child of my parents and the

youngest of four. I grew up with two step-brothers and a foster sister, and my family is a core part of who I am. As a way of introduction, I’m sharing a wedding photo from earlier this year: you’ll see my husband, Eden, and me holding our marriage certificate. I’m in a tiara with braided hair and a white, puffy princess dress, and Eden’s in a black suit with a white shirt, black vest and red bow tie (goatee and all); the image has a warm, vintage yellow tint.

Why I started this blog

For the last year, I shared short posts and photos on Instagram, LinkedIn and Facebook. I posted about events I attended, things I was learning, and quick tips. Those posts helped start conversations. But they only scratched the surface.

Some topics need more space. Policies affect real people. Intersectional problems, where mental health, disability, age, place and money meet, are messy. A caption can’t show the full story. A thread can’t connect the person at a kitchen table to the lawmaker in Canberra.

So I started Bridge 4 Better. This is a place for longer thinking. It’s where we can link lived experience, grassroots work and policy. It’s where I will try out ideas, share lessons, and invite you to join the work.

How often I will post:

For the first month, I’ll publish twice weekly, every Wednesday and Saturday at 12:00 PM. After month one, the blog will move to a weekly release with new posts each Saturday at 12:00 PM. Occasional bonus posts may drop between scheduled weekly releases.

What I will write about

This blog is not just about laws or bills. I will write about:

  • Intersectionality: how disability, mental health, age, place, culture and money combine to shape people’s lives.

  • Lived experience & grassroots practice: short, honest pieces from community meetings, co-design sessions and local projects.

  • Why policymakers need grassroots: simple, practical ways decision makers can listen better and act smarter.

  • Personal stories: my experiences and, with permission, others’ stories that show the human impact of policy.

  • Occasional faith reflections: short pieces on how my faith shapes my ethics and work.

My approach: start with journaling, then go deeper

I’m beginning with reflective journal posts. These will be honest and often personal. They will share what I learned, where I got stuck, and small tools that helped me. Each post will end with 2–3 clear takeaways you can use.

Later, when we talk about policy or legislation in detail, those posts will include references, links and sources. For now, early posts will be individual ideas, reflections and named sources when needed. Over time, we’ll start to integrate policy analysis, ideas and conversation.

A little more about me

I’m Karen Boulton-Gorry. I got married in May this year to my wonderful husband, Eden, as seen in the photo above. I live and work in regional Queensland. I am a community advocate, a Labor Party member, and I sit on the headspace Youth National Reference Group. I have an Undergraduate Certificate in Community Services, and I am studying a diploma in political science and international relations. Side note, I am also halfway through a social work degree.

Some personal things you might like to know:

  • I collect books (buying and reading are two separate hobbies, right?). I love YA fantasy with detailed magic systems, found family stories and a touch of romance (but, please, no vampires, witches or werewolves).

  • I used to compete in sporting pistol shooting. My grandad taught me when I was 12 after I spent a year watching from the car. I still enjoy shooting for fun.

  • I have a rare genetic micro-deletion (1q21.1 / 1q21.2). It shapes my lived experience, work and interest in disability aware policy.

  • I am a sucker for a good TV show or movie. I adore Gilmore Girls, it's probably my favourite show (Team Logan BTW). We can debate that over coffee.

  • I am a Jesus follower. My faith guides my ethics and my belief that every person has dignity.

These parts of me inform how I think and what I write. They do not define every post, but they do shape my view of the world.

How will I protect people and their work

  • Consent first. I will not publish someone’s personal story without their clear permission.

  • Respectful discourse. Critique ideas, not people. Cruelty is not welcome.

  • Evidence where needed. When we dig into formal policy, I will add references and links.

  • Corrections are welcome. If I make a mistake, I’ll fix it and note the change.

Next post (coming soon)

Title: Pitching Vulnerability: navigating new experiences and first time stage fright. (See it here first)

Over the coming weeks, you will notice the blogs have similar content to my previous social media posts. This is because I am going deeper into reflections and learnings, as many have asked for this. I will put at the bottom of each post the next post title, and if it is a "see it here first" meaning this content has not been shared on social media yet. Please bear with me as I get the blog posts up to date with my socials. Eventually, the blog will come out, then the social media content.

Thank you for joining me as we introduced the Bridge 4 Better blog. Let’s learn together, connecting lived knowledge with policy that makes life better for people in our towns, suburbs and regions.

From the Fraser Coast: let’s keep building,

Karen Boulton-Gorry
