NGO, NFP and charity: what’s the difference?

You might hear these words and think they mean the same thing. They are similar, but not exactly the same.

NGO = non-government organisation. This means it is not part of the government. It can still get government funding, but it is separate from the government.

NFP = not-for-profit. This means it is not set up to make money for private owners or shareholders (people who own part of a company). Any extra money should go back into the work or the group.

Charity = a type of NFP In Australia, a charity must have a charitable purpose and help the public or community.

The key point:
✔ All charities are NFPs
✔ Not all NFPs are charities
✔ NGO just means “not government”
Some organisations can fit into more than one of these categories.

Why this matters: These organisations run services many people rely on every day, like food relief, housing support, disability services, youth programs and community services.

Simple way to remember:
NGO = not government
NFP = not for profit
Charity = helps the public

Easter Sunday 🐣 ✝️ 🪨

Today children do Egg Hunts and Easter chocolate for breakfast. Families spend time together. While, Christians also attend church to praise God for Jesus being raised from the dead.

Easter Sunday represents the day that Jesus rose from the grave and the miracles and mission he gave before he went to heaven (alive not dead). Not only did he die for our sins but he sent the Holy Spirit in his departure to be our advisor. This is What I remember today.

Good Friday ✝️

While for some today marks the start of school Holidays and a long weekend but, for many this is one of the most important days of the year.

Good Friday represents the day that Jesus died on the cross for our sins. When you look at the old testament you see that they had to do sacrifices and on the day of Good Friday, we see how Jesus had gone through each test, like what the lambs did for sacrfice in the Old Testament, to prove that he was worthy and without blemish. this is because and Jesus abolished the need for sacrifice as he was the ultimate sacrifice in a Good Friday.We remember these sacrifice that he made for us.It is not a morning for day though , because we know that on this is because and Jesus abolished the need for sacrifice. As he was the ultimate sacrifice and on Good Friday, we remember the sacrifice that he made for us. It is not mourningful as we know 3 days later he is risen.

This week in Wide Bay–Burnett: what matters and why👇

Floodwaters are easing in Bundaberg and nearby areas, but recovery is far from over. Around 240 homes and 120 businesses were inundated, recovery hubs are open, and some communities are still dealing with isolation, damage and safety risks.

Queensland has also released proposed new state electorate boundaries, with concerns that parts of the Fraser Coast, including Hervey Bay Hospital, could be moved into a different electorate. These changes are not final.

At the same time, fuel prices are rising fast. The national average is about 198c a litre, with some places well over $2, partly linked to conflict in the Middle East disrupting oil shipping and supply fears.

Queensland’s new protest law is already being tested, after police action at a Brisbane protest, sparking debate around free speech, hate speech and public safety.

And federally, David Littleproud has stepped down as Nationals leader, with Queensland Senator Matt Canavan taking over, the Coalition’s second federal leadership change in about a month.

The bigger picture: for regional Queensland, it all adds up to more pressure on everyday people from flood recovery and rising fuel costs to growing political uncertainty.

Today we will be going of the basics of the Senate and how it is different to the House of Representatives and why it matters to you.

Thought leader: what it actually means + how you become one

I heard the term thought leader in a meeting last week and honestly… I had no clue what it meant.

Everyone nodded like it was obvious, so I did the classic thing: nodded too, went home, and looked it up.

Here’s the simple version:

A thought leader is someone people trust because they help others make sense of things.

Not because they’re loud.
Not because they’re popular.
Because when they speak, people leave clearer than before.

And this part matters:

Thought leadership isn’t a title you give yourself. It’s something other people give you over time, when you consistently show up with clarity, honesty, and useful ideas.

In community advocacy, that looks like:
• translating messy issues into plain English
• naming the real problem, not just the symptom
• using lived experience without pretending to speak for everyone
• backing your points with facts where you can
• giving people a practical next step

That’s why I’m focusing on it for Bridge 4 Better.

So many people care deeply about disability access, mental health, youth voice, and regional communities being left behind.

But a lot of people feel locked out because the system is written in “policy speak,” and the rules feel built for insiders.

I’ve seen both sides of that.

I’ve worked inside government as an Assistant Electorate Officer, and I’ve spent years in youth advisory and disability inclusion spaces.

What I’ve learned is this:

The people who explain the issue clearly, and show a pathway forward, are the ones who get heard.

So if you want to build thought leadership too, here’s what I’m using:

Pick your lane.
Choose one issue and stick with it long enough for people to trust you.

Be a translator, not a performer.
Explain it like you’re talking to a mate.

Bring a “what now?” every time.
Give people one real action they can take.

Protect your credibility.
Say what you know, back it where you can, and be willing to correct yourself.

Trust is the whole game.

Politics 101 Part 2: Responsibility of each level of Government

Federal (Commonwealth) — Makes national laws; controls defence, foreign affairs, immigration; manages taxation, currency and trade; funds nationwide programs like Medicare and social security; overrides state law when validly inconsistent.

State/Territory — Runs core services: public hospitals, schools, police, courts and prisons; manages transport, roads and public housing frameworks; sets most planning, environment and resource rules; raises taxes like payroll tax and stamp duty; territories’ powers can be overridden by the Commonwealth.

Local (Councils) — Provides local services: waste, local roads, parks, libraries and community facilities; applies local planning schemes and assesses many developments; manages local health/amenity like food inspections and pets; funded mainly by rates, fees and grants; powers come from state/territory law.

Environmental scans: what are they and why do they matter?

An environmental scan is a simple way to understand the world around your work so your planning is based on real community needs, not assumptions.
Think of it as a big picture check that helps you make good decisions. It is especially useful when you are building a strategic plan, strengthening governance, or setting up a new group or association.

My scan covers what is relevant to my sectors and roles and it can apply to a business, organisation, group, or community project. It looks at the context we operate in and what that means for priorities, partnerships, and practical action.
What an environmental scan typically includes: Place, People, Everyday pressures, Services and systems, Trends, risks, and opportunities.

What this looks like in practice, using my environmental scan:

Place: Where we operate, how far people travel, transport options, and how accessible everyday spaces are.

People: Who lives in the region, changing demographics, disability and caring roles, and what inclusion looks like in real life.

Everyday pressures: Housing, cost of living, work and income realities, and the factors that can increase stress or exclusion.

Services and systems: What supports exist, where the gaps are, how easy it is to navigate systems, and where coordination could improve outcomes.

Trends, risks, and opportunities: Policy and funding changes, workforce pressures, emerging community priorities, climate and disaster impacts, and opportunities for partnerships and local initiatives.

Why it matters:
A scan helps you turn good intentions into clear, realistic priorities. It gives you a stronger reason for your focus areas, helps you explain decisions to others, and supports planning that is relevant, accountable, and grounded in lived experience.

Queensland update on e-bikes and e-scooters 🚲🛴

A QLD Parliament inquiry is expected to recommend:
• No riding under-16
• Age 16 plus needs at least a car learner's licence

Not law yet. Recommendations only.

What happens next:
• Final report expected this week
• Government has up to 3 months to respond
• If supported, new rules and a transition period would follow

Why this matters:
• Could limit under 16 transport options
• Could add a new barrier for 16-plus riders who do not have a licence
• Costs may be about $106 plus time, internet, ID, and service centre travel
• Bigger impact for disabled people and regional communities if access and exemptions are not built in

If you rely on e-bikes or e-scooters, keep an eye on the report and be ready to share feedback when the response drops.

Bridge 4 Better: Our 6 Pillars to Bridging voices, building change!

Picture a river sitting between people and opportunity.
Our 6 pillars are the steps to building a bridge across it, so people can move from barriers to belonging.

1) Equality + Equity (the foundation)
Equality is giving everyone the same thing, but it assumes we all start in the same spot.
Equity is giving people what they need to reach the same outcome, because some have been held back by the system.

2) Access + Inclusion (the build)
Access is getting onto the bridge, ramps, pathways, clear signs, and a way that people can actually use.
Inclusion is what happens after that, not just being in the room, but having your voice count and a real say in decisions.

3) Justice + Liberation (the destination)
Justice is fixing what caused the gap, changing rules, policies, and accountability so barriers don’t keep getting rebuilt.
Liberation is real freedom, where people aren’t controlled by barriers inside or out, and dignity and choice are the norm.

What drives the change:
Advocacy = the voice (speaking up, pushing decision-makers).
Activism = the action (organising, applying pressure, building solutions).

At Bridge 4 Better, we use advocacy, activism, and education to push for equity, grow that into justice, and keep liberation as the long-term goal, until the gap that needed a bridge doesn’t exist anymore.

Hot take: accessibility isn’t inclusion.
And a ramp doesn’t automatically mean people belong.

Here’s the plain-English difference:

Accessibility is being able to get in and use something.
Ramps, lifts, clear signs, captions, AUSLAN, accessible websites.
It’s the stuff that makes places, services, and tech usable.

Inclusion is what happens after you get in.
Being welcomed, respected, and involved not just present.
It means your voice has weight and you can actually influence what’s happening.

This is how I picture it:
Accessibility is the ramp into the building where the meeting is.
Inclusion is having a seat at the table in the meeting: being heard, not spoken over, not sidelined, not treated like an add on.

Too often, organisations stop at access. They tick the box, but people still don’t feel like they belong or that their voice carries weight.

At Bridge 4 Better, we’re about bridging voices and building change and that means pushing for inclusion, not just access.

Inclusion can start small:
Invite someone into the convo. Make space. Ask what they need. Then listen and let it shape the outcome.

Justice vs Liberation

Ever heard someone say, “We’ve got justice now, so we’re done”?
Not quite.

Justice is about making things fair inside the system.
It asks: Are the rules fair? Are decisions fair? Are outcomes fair?

Justice is what people are owed: safety, dignity, rights, access, and fair treatment. That can look like better laws, stronger policies, proper funding, removing barriers, and real accountability so harm doesn’t keep repeating.

Liberation goes deeper.
It’s about freedom from control and oppression, not just a “fairer” version of the same setup.
It asks: Who has the power? Who gets to decide? Who benefits, and who pays the price?

Liberation is when communities aren’t just included in systems that hurt them; they’re no longer trapped by them. It includes practical change (housing, wages, safety), and also cultural + psychological freedom: not having to shrink yourself, prove your worth, or live under constant judgment.

Here’s why both matter:
Justice without liberation can still leave the same power sitting at the top. The system might look fairer on paper, but people can still be controlled through stigma, punishment, gatekeeping, or “rules that only work for some.”

Liberation without justice can feel too far away, because people still need real protections and support right now while bigger change is being built.

Easy way to remember it:
✅ Justice: make the system fair and accountable.
🔥 Liberation: make sure people aren’t controlled or harmed by the system at all.

Most movements need both: justice for urgent change now, and liberation so we don’t stop at small fixes that leave the root problem untouched.

Equity vs Equality

Before anything changes, we’ve got to choose the right approach.
Equality is giving everyone the same thing. Sounds fair… but it assumes everyone starts from the same place.

Equity is giving people what they need to reach the same outcome. It recognises some people have been held back by the system.

You’ve probably seen those pics: the fence at the footy, everyone standing on the same box (some still can’t see), then different sized boxes (now they can), and finally no fence at all. Most of us get the idea, but we still push for equality over equity.

Another example is that video where kids line up for a race and get asked questions like: “Have you ever had to work to help pay bills?” “Gone without power?” “Had family stuff going on?” Then they look around and realise some kids have been pushed way back. Same race. Totally different starting line.
That’s why “same for everyone” can still be unfair.

And here’s the big myth: equity isn’t someone getting “more than you.” It’s someone getting what they need, so they can stand beside you, not behind or in front of you.

Living in regional Australia, you see this a lot. When services try to do things fairly, the comments can get nasty because people don’t always understand what equity means. Regional communities already face extra hurdles, but don’t always get extra support, and that can turn into frustration. I’ve felt that myself.

But equity isn’t about who deserves more or less.
It’s about recognising different needs, so we all get a real shot together.

A bridge doesn’t pretend the barrier isn’t there.
It admits the water is real… and then it builds a way through it.

Bridging Voices, Building Change!
Not just a tagline. A blueprint.

Think of driving over a big bridge in Brisbane or Sydney.
The water is still there, but access is possible anyway.

That’s what Bridge 4 Better is.

Because the water is the barrier: paperwork, stigma, distance, silence, systems not built for you. And in regional Queensland, those barriers stack up.

So when I say bridge, I mean two things:

1) We meet in the middle.
Not shouting across a gap and hoping someone listens. A bridge brings people close enough to understand each other and close enough to actually do something about it.

2) We make once-inaccessible places accessible.
Not by pretending the barrier is gone, but by building something strong enough to cross it: step by step, with a foundation that holds.

And that’s why Bridge 4 Better covers disability inclusion, youth, mental health, regional equity… and more.
Because access isn’t one issue. It’s the difference between being included and being left behind in services, transport, education, community, and everyday life.

Foundation first: you don’t pour concrete at the top. You start at the bottom. Before we go complex, we go clear. We start with the basics: plain-English education, civic confidence, and simple actions anyone can take. Then we build up: stories into submissions, questions into proposals, voices into campaigns.

Because a bridge that carries real weight has to be strong at the base before it reaches further. Because a bridge isn’t built for attention, it’s built so people can finally get across.

If politics didn’t affect your life, you wouldn’t notice it. But it does, every single day.

Politics isn’t the yelling you see on TV. It isn’t just politicians fighting. Politics is the system that decides how your daily life works, even when you don’t realise it.

It’s where the rules come from about speed limits, road laws, minimum wage, tax, superannuation, Medicare, public health, education, free kindy, disability support, housing, and the cost of living. These aren’t abstract ideas. They affect your pay, your health, your children, and your future. That is politics.

Politics is about priorities. The people in power decide what gets funded and what gets ignored. Those choices decide who gets support, who gets opportunity, and who gets left behind. That’s why politics is not distant. It is personal.

It shapes access to healthcare, education, transport, community services, employment protections, and disability access. Strong communities don’t happen by luck. They are built through decisions and those decisions come from politics.
Understanding politics isn’t about blindly picking sides. It’s about knowing what each group believes, what policies they support, and who those policies help. So you can vote for people who will fight for what helps you and your family. Voting is not just a habit. It is a tool. It is your voice.

Politics belongs to everyday people. You don’t need fancy language or a degree to be part of it. You only need to understand how decisions affect your life. Clear information builds confidence. Confidence helps people speak up. Stronger voices create change.

Everyone deserves to understand the system shaping their lives.

Hot take: activism isn’t a dirty word. And advocacy isn’t useless just because it happens quietly. Bridge 4 Better is built for both, plus civic education.
Here’s the plain-English difference:

Advocacy = protecting rights and improving access, often inside systems. Think meetings, submissions, policy feedback, evidence, and practical solutions.

Activism = direct, visible action that creates public pressure when change stalls. Think campaigns, community organising, media, digital action, and peaceful demonstrations that drive accountability.

A line one of my colleagues said to me this week is:
“All activists are advocates, but not all advocates are activists.”
And this got me. same goal, different tools.

Also: activism isn’t chaos. It isn’t unethical behaviour or “people screaming for the sake of it.” Real activism can be respectful, community-led, and evidence-informed. It’s what helps force timelines, transparency, and follow-through when systems delay, deflect, or box-tick.

So what is Bridge 4 Better?
facts not noise. We’re not here to be politically “one way.” We’re community-first. We’re about outcomes: disability inclusion, youth, mental health, and regional equity. We translate community reality into decision-ready language, and translate policy decisions back into plain English so people can engage with confidence.
In short: we don’t just amplify voices.

We connect them to the rooms where decisions are made, and help turn shared problems into shared solutions so communities and decision-makers can meet in the middle, then move forward together.

We work in two lanes:
Systemic advocacy: submissions • meetings • evidence • solutions
Activism: campaigns • voices • media • accountability

Diabetes Awareness

When people talk about diabetes, Type 1 and Type 2 are often mentioned like they are simple and easy to understand.

But diabetes is much more complex than many people realise.

My mum lives with Type 2 diabetes, but her experience does not fit the common assumptions people often have.

For her, it is connected to muscle weakness and her body having difficulty absorbing and using glucose properly.

That is why education matters.

Even within Type 2 diabetes, people can have different experiences, different causes, different challenges, and different support needs.

Diabetes deserves understanding, care, education, and the right support.

When we learn more, we judge less.

When we understand more, we support better.

This Diabetes Awareness Month, I want to acknowledge everyone living with diabetes, including those whose experience does not fit the common story.

More awareness means better understanding.

Men’s Mental Health

It ain’t weak to speak.

Too many men are still taught to stay quiet, push through, keep it together, or deal with things alone.

But silence does not make people stronger.

Support does.

Checking in on your mates matters.
Making space for honest conversations matters.
Listening without judgement matters.
Reminding someone they are not a burden matters.

Men deserve access to mental health support, community, connection, and care.

Especially in regional areas, where distance, stigma, cost, waitlists, and limited services can make it even harder to reach out.

This month is a reminder to keep fighting the stigma around men’s mental health.

Ask the question.
Make the call.
Send the message.
Sit beside someone.
Let them know they are not alone.

Because it really ain’t weak to speak.

Diploma Of Political Science and International Relations Update

Today marks a milstone for me. I submitted my last university assignment for my Diploma. I am now awaiting final grades and then graduation. I started this course almost a year ago. It was during a tough time for me. I had just been diagnosed with Glandular Fever and the next week start this course. There were many days I wondered if this day would come. Days when my body and my mind failed me but, in the end we made it.I am so blessed and thankful to my amazing Family. My husband @gozza_7, my mum @catherineboulton and my dad @pete_boulton who have stood by me, cheeared me on and supported me when I needed it. I can’t wait to share what I will be taking on next.

Best Friends Day

This one is for my best friend, @supertiggergal, Marissa, Rissa, my ride or die.

The person who sees me on the good days and the bad days, and still stands beside me.

The person who has grown with me so much over the past four years.

Through life, change, hard moments, healing, laughter, learning, and all the in-between, you have been there.

Best friendship is not just about being there when things are easy.

It is showing up when life is messy.
When emotions are big.
When growth is uncomfortable.
When love needs patience.
When life needs laughter.

I also want to acknowledge Jase, who over the past year has become such an integral part of this friendship too, just like Eden has.

It is something special when the people beside us become part of the bond, the memories, and the laughter.

Queensland Day - 6 June

Queensland Day is a time to recognise the people, places, communities, and stories that shape this state.

For those of us in regional Queensland, it is also a reminder that strong communities do not happen by accident.

They are built through care, access, inclusion, fairness, and people showing up for each other.

In the Fraser Coast and Wide Bay Burnett, our communities have so much strength, resilience, culture, and local knowledge.

But we also know that regional people can face real barriers.

Access to health care
Mental health support
Disability services
Housing
Transport
Education
Employment
Community safety
Youth opportunities

Queensland Day should not only be about pride.
It should also be about responsibility.

A better Queensland means no one is left behind because of where they live, who they are, their disability, their age, their gender, their income, or their circumstances.

Today, I am holding both pride and purpose.

Pride in our communities.
Purpose in continuing to advocate for justice, access, inclusion, equality, and equity across regional Queensland.

Because a stronger Queensland starts with communities where everyone can belong, participate, and be heard.

Assistive Technology Awareness Day

Assistive technology is not a luxury.
It is access, dignity, independence, and inclusion.

For many people, the right support can make everyday life safer, easier, and more connected.

Assistive technology can include:

Communication devices
Mobility aids
Sensory tools
Hearing supports
Screen readers
Modified equipment
Digital tools and apps

These tools help people take part in education, work, family life, community, and everyday activities.

But access is still not equal.

In regional communities, people can face extra barriers like cost, long waitlists, distance, limited local services, and confusing systems.

Awareness matters, but action matters too.

Everyone deserves the tools, support, and respect they need to live fully and participate equally.

Accessibility is not optional.
It is a human right.

Autumn Breeze

During our anniversary Eden and I lit our first fire of the season. One of my favourite things about the cooler weather is sitting around the fire of an evening. Unfortunately, my body struggles with the cold so any way of warming me up is a go to in our family.

QLD Labor Enabled 2026 Conference

On Sunday I attened the QLD Labor Enabled Conference. At which 37 motions were discussed and many were passed. Of those seven of them were ones I wrote. For the first time within the party I shared my own thoughts and ideas of what policy we should be creating. These policies were based on lived experience and community conversations. Of the seven, five of them passed this level of confrence and 2 we have taken back to drafting before voting on them.

Though I bet your wondering that is cool but what difference does that make and what is the point of this? keep reading to hear the process these go through and what impact it will make.

This conference was one of many policy conferences that will take place throughout QLD Labor in the next few months. At these local and equity group conferences motions, amendments and resolutions will be debated. Those that pass will be reviewed by an admin committee and then those that are accepted will be taken to the QLD Labor State Conference.

The motions passed at the QLD Labor State Conference become what QLD Labor is fighting for and believes. This means local, real aussies get to shape policy.

This is my first step to advocating for a Bridge 4 Better within the system.

This Friday Eden and I had the privilege of attending Samuel and Irene's wedding in Tweed Heads. It was a beautiful day filled with love, laughter and a lot of smilies. Sam is Eden's cousin and we are so excited to officially call Irene Family now. We wish the newly married couple a life blessed filled with love, laughter and Christ at the centre.

Boat Club Dinner

A few weeks ago I had dinner for the second time at the Boat Club. It was the first time since their menu update. The update to menu helped a lot. Pior to this finding food that meet my small dietary availability was hard. Now there is roasts and stake which helped so much. The music was a nice extra.

Voulnteer Appreciation Week

This weekend is Voulnteer Appreciation Week. This week is about recognising hard working Voulnteers who are a corner stone of our communities.

This week I attened the Art of Voulnteer Cordination where we grew our skills and Appreciation for our hard working Voulnteers.

I am apart of some amazing Voulnteer Organisations and want to give them a shoutout this week.

Maryborough City Progress Association Inc. who run the Mary Christmas Maryborough CBD Street Party, Mary Movie Nights - MCPAI and The Mary Easter Scavenger Hunt. All of there events are run by Voulnteers with not one paid worker. I have been part of this organisation for 8 years now and it is a privilege to work alongside passionate members.

Fraser Coast Advocacy Inclusion Inc a newly formed non-for-profit. Designed for people with disabilities by people with disabilities. To advocate and educate for better acess and inclusion for all community members. They maybe newly formed but full of ideas and willingness to fight for a better future.

@australiansformentalhealth A group I joined last year and have the privilege of being part od their Youth Unmuted Traineeship. A group of Voulnteers Working in Advocacy and Actvism with Collective unity to fight for better mental health Systems. I am honoured to be one of their Youth Unmuted Core Leaders. Where I sit with nine other incredible young people from the Youth Unmuted Traineeship. all passionate and dedicated.

@frasercoastregionalcouncil Inclusive Acess Advisory Committee (IAAC). All Voulnteers from our local community working with the council to find ways to build and improve our community to be acessible.

Happy International Museum Day

If you know anything about me I am a sucker for history and learning. 2 years ago and a year ago today the day I attened the Hervey Bay historical village. A place so special to me and my Hubby. It’s where we went on our first big date and the place we got married.

Our first year of marriage has not been an easy one. Through sickness, grief, career changes and navigating life together. We still laughed, stood by each other and grew together. You have supported me in every way that matters and you never give up even when times get hard. You are my strength and cheer squad. I am your biggest fan and supporter. A year of challenges has only made our love stronger and more alive.

Today, we celebrate our first of many anniversaries. This year is special and I am so glad we have gotten to spend it in the sunshine coast exploring.

Sydney Trip 2, Day 2

Our last in-person Day for The @australiansformentalhealth (AFMH) Youth Unmuted Traineeship.

We learnt about photography skills such as lighting and angles from David Collins. We then came up with a where to from here plan.

Finally, We had our graduation dinner with AFMH Board Members and partners. After the official closure if the program we weren't ready to day goodbye yet so, chated till early hours of the morning.

Apologise for the delayed post. I wanted to update you all on the learnings but, saying goodbye to the team was more important.

Sydney Trip 2, Day 1: Learning about how to be Community Organisers.

The day started with how to do a power analysis to map where individuals and organisations sit in support for your campaign. Combined with what influence they have over making the decisions for the result you want. This was a useful tool that broke down complex relationships in an easy to map way.

We meet with former Minster For Olympics and Minster for the roads Hon. Mr Michael Knight former Member for Campbelltown. Who Gave us a how to talk to politicians lesson. We learnt about the best way to frame a conversation with MP's and how to follow it up.

Following this we met with Nick from Horton Advisory who gave us a News Media 101 Lesson. We Learnt about Journlistic values and ideas. Then how we can use them to our advantage when needing to get a story into the media.

Then we finshed the day preparing ideas and scripts for our recording session. Where we are creating content for Youth Unmuted.

Today was a busy day full of principles we can apply in our roles with Youth Unmuted @australiansformentalhealth
